The principal aim this dissertation has been an investifation into the relationship between agricultural research technology and the accumulation of capital. The relationship that we explore is a more technical and specific expression of the commonly stated relationhip between technology and society. Chapters 1 through 5 are consequently involved in the process of refornulating the problem and postulating the connections between technology and society in view of that reformulation. Chapter 6 serves as an empiracal ilustration of some of the connections that were postulated. The investifation into the relationship between technology and society involved the pursuit of three objectives that can be summarized as: (1) a reformunation of the problem; (2) the pulling together of a theoretical framewoork capable of broadly explaning some of the fundamental determinants in relations; and (3) using Brazils research organization, EMBRAPA, as an illustration, an empirical analysis of foregoing theoretical discussiosns and reformulations. |

ABSTRACT. This study discusses a forest restoration model in which planted or naturally regenerating native species are allowed to develop in the rows or the understory of Eucalyptus forests, as such, eucalypts function as facilitating species for the establishment of native species while also providing income to landowners. Details of the planning, implementation and results of plantations in which eucalypts grown in rows served as facilitating species for natural regeneration and growth of native forest species are presented. Plantations in 187 family farms form the basis of the project entitled ?Implementation and management of forests in small properties in the state of Paraná?, which is part of the Paraná Biodiversity Program of the Secretary of Environment and Water Resources (Sema-PR). In this project, Embrapa Forestry was responsible for providing technical support in developing the model and identifying areas for reforestation. The project involved Emater-PR, the Environmental Institute of Paraná (IAP), and the State Secretaries of Planning and Management (SEPL) and Agriculture and Food Supply (Seab). The project was established across six municipalities in the extreme northwest region of Paraná State and sought to develop technologies that enable the restoration of degraded areas, while also supporting the recovery of the natural environment and offering income for producers. The growth and production of eucalypts were evaluated in six plantations, while native species were assessed in two plantations. The natural regeneration of native species presented 15 species at an advanced stage of growth, which ensures their survival during periods of drought that are common in the region. The results indicate that eucalypt productivity was satisfactory and has the potential to significantly increase and improve income generated from the restored areas. We conclude that this innovative model is fully viable, since it reconciles environmental and genetic conservation of threatened species, ensuring the survival of local populations of these species and generating income for rural properties.
